I certainly don't have anything against traditional ovens. They do a fine job of cooking and baking food. Breville ovens, however, are in a class of their own. And while this countertop oven does all the work for you (for more basic toaster ovens click here), there are a few ways to clean your toaster oven that you should be aware of. Once you learn the best way to clean your toasters, you'll be able to do almost anything in this modern oven (see also the best large taster ovens review).
In this handy how-to, you'll learn how to clean your Breville toaster oven (see also 'Breville BOV900BSS Review') to ensure optimal performance and longevity. So with that, let's get cooking, er, cleaning.
What Is a Breville Toaster Oven?
The Breville toaster oven, or Smart Oven, is an 1800-watt stove - see also lower wattage options - that sits right on your countertop. It can automatically adjust the heat according to your cooking situation. In the oven, I can bake biscuits and pizza (check out the best 4 slice oven) evenly, as well as toast and various roast meats. In addition, take a look at what other renown brands have on offer when it comes to ovens that reach very high temperatures of 500 degrees Fahrenheit.
If you have a Breville Toaster Oven - there's also a mini smart option for camping - it will speed up the cooking process by 30%. If you know the tricks to clean the toaster, cleaning is easier than ever. According to Breville's support team, the Breville Toaster Oven - see our Breville Mini Smart Oven Review' - is made of the highest quality materials, so you need to be careful when cleaning the oven.
What to Use, What Not to Use
According to Breville USA Support, you shouldn't use abrasive cleaners, metal scouring pads, or metal utensils on the crumb tray outside or inside of the toaster. The interior of the Breville toaster oven has a non-stick coating on the walls. As such, you can use a soft, damp sponge and an oven cleaner or mild cleaning solution.
When cleaning the interior of the toaster oven, you should not spray or pour the liquid cleanser directly onto the surface. Rather, I found that you should pour the liquid or the cleaner onto your sponge without touching the quartz heating elements.
Always Let Cool
Moreover, you have to let the toaster oven cool down and then you can clean next to the heating element. Just make sure you don't use any detergents, and your Breville is completely dry before using it.
When you're ready to clean the outer body or door, you don't want to use any abrasive cleaners. Instead, use a non-abrasive cleaner or a mild cleaner, along with a soft, damp sponge to clean the exterior body and door.
When applying the cleanser to the sponge instead of the exterior surface to clean the door, use a glass cleaner or mild detergent for optimal results.
Essential Cleaning
The crumb tray in the oven should be cleaned regularly, as grease and crumbs can quickly collect there. If you notice crumbs build up, you can pull out the crumb tray and discard it, but if you have baked grease marks, you can soak the sheet in warm soapy water to crumble it into crumbs.
You can then wash it off with a soft sponge. You can also soak the wire rack, roaster, baking tray, and pizza pan in warm soapy water. Fortunately, the grill grate, baking tray, and pizza tray are all dishwasher safe for easier cleanup.
Something to Consider
A word of caution, however. Over the years, I found that washing these kinds of accessories in a dishwasher tends to reduce their lifespan. While I'm not certain that Breville's racks and trays are any better or worse than other toaster ovens, it's certainly something to consider.
As such, I like to alternate between washing by hand and in the dishwasher. If nothing else, this at least assures me that I'm not affecting their longevity as much as I could be.
Directions for How to Clean Breville Toaster Oven
You must switch off the toaster before cleaning the oven. This can be done by pressing the Start/Cancel button located on the control panel. You can tell the toaster oven is powered down when the button backlight turns off.
Then, unplug the power cord from the toaster oven and allow it to cool down before disassembling it. Now you can start cleaning the toaster oven by following the steps below. First, dip a soft sponge in a liquid cleanser or mild spray solution.
Manual Cleaning
The spray works to prevent stubborn stains from developing on the toaster. Next, take the sponge and use it to properly clean the outer body of the toaster. Please note, however, that you should never apply any type of cleaner directly to the surface of the toaster oven. Instead, take a rag and apply it manually.
Then, wipe the LCD screen with a damp rag to remove stains. I recommend that you avoid cleaning with a dry cloth, as it is not very safe to use and can scratch the surface of the oven.
Allow to Dry
After cleaning the outer body of the toaster oven, I like to make sure the entire surface of the unit dries. When cleaning a toaster oven, ensure that it is completely dry before turning it on. It's the safest approach and ensures less risk of injury.
If the case, power cord, or plug come into contact with water, there is a risk of electric shock. You should therefore be very careful when cleaning any type of toaster oven. You should be careful to never immerse the housing, power cord, and plug-in water.
Cleaning the Interior
Cleaning the inside of the oven is just as essential as the outside. Thanks to the non-stick walls, you can easily wipe the inside of the oven. Take a non-abrasive cleanser and soak it in a soft, smooth sponge to prevent it from sticking to the walls.
In addition, you should not wash the heating elements with a sponge or cloth soaked in a non-abrasive detergent. Finally, let the oven dry and make sure it is completely dry before turning it back on.
Cleaning the Elements
Before you begin cleaning the quartz heating elements, allow the toaster to cool down. After the toaster has completely cooled down, you can clean these items with a damp cloth or sponge without soaking them in detergent or cleaning spray solution. Let these items dry, and do not switch the toaster back on until it is completely dry.
Cleaning the Crumb Tray
Every time you use the toaster and remove the crumb tray, clean it after throwing away the crumbs. Take a soft pad, soak it in non-abrasive dish soap, and then scrub the crumb tray thoroughly to clean it properly.
Please note, however, that you never apply the cleanser directly to the crumb tray. After cleaning, let the crumb tray dry before using it again. To remove grease from the crumb tray, soak it in soapy, warm water. Next, take a scouring pad, cloth, or sponge and wipe down the crumb tray.
The toaster oven accessories include a rack, grill rack, baking tray, and a pizza pan. These items should be properly washed by soaking them in warm, soapy water with a plastic scouring pad or sponge.
Any metal parts or accessories should be cleaned with a sponge or plastic scouring pad soaked in a non-abrasive cleaning agent. After you've thoroughly washed all of these items, let them dry.
How to Clean Breville Toaster Oven with Baking Soda
This applies to when you clean a toaster oven in general, not just a Breville Toaster Oven. Baking soda works well to remove all manner of buildup, from caked-on crumbs to baked-on grease. What's more, it's a safe and effective way to avoid using harsh chemicals on an appliance that food comes into contact with.
Making Baking Soda Paste
To clean a toaster with baking soda, make a paste by mixing baking soda and water. Spread the paste in a cool, disconnected toaster oven, always avoiding the internal heating elements. Let it stand for at least 12 hours or more. For quick cleaning, one hour's time should be sufficient. Clean up with a damp cloth and warm water.
A mixture of baking soda and water or white vinegar is a great way to clean toaster ovens. Just avoid heating elements and make sure the oven is turned off and not plugged in. Let the mixture sit for up to 24 hours, depending on how dirty it is.
Turn Upside-Down
Clean with warm water and a cloth. To clean the roof of your toaster, I like to slide it upside down once it's unplugged and all of the grids and trays have been removed. Then, I clean the ceiling the same way I would clean the rest of the toaster oven.
For the grids and baking trays in your toaster oven, remove and place them in the sink or on a flat baking sheet. Sprinkle some baking soda over it and drizzle or pour a small amount of white vinegar over it.
The baking powder will start to foam. If so, fill the sink with hot water and drop the grids and trays, leaving the baking soda mixture on top. Leave them in the water overnight for large jobs or an hour or two for minor cleanings, then gently wipe down.
